Plumbing problems that lead to water leaks in newly constructed homes can be a major headache for homeowners. One of the most common causes is improper installation of pipes, fixtures, and fittings by contractors rushing to complete the job. Pipes may not be adequately secured, allowing them to vibrate and loosen over time. Cheap, low-quality materials can also fail prematurely. Rushed contractors might neglect to properly seal pipe threads and connections with Teflon tape or pipe dope.
Water hammer from abrupt pressure changes in the lines can rattle pipes and cause leaks if shock absorbers aren’t installed. In cold climates, pipes may not be sufficiently insulated and can freeze and burst. Nail strikes from drywall or flooring installation can puncture pipes. Even something as simple as an inexperienced plumber over-tightening a connection can cause immediate or eventual leaks.
The bottom line is, with new construction, be sure your builder uses experienced, licensed plumbers who take pride in their work, use quality materials, and don’t cut corners – or you could be dealing with water damage down the road.
