Is My Water Safe?

Ensuring the safety of your drinking water is of utmost importance, whether you get your water from a private well or are connected to a municipal water supply. While public water systems are regularly tested and treated according to EPA standards, it’s still wise to be proactive about confirming your water is free of harmful contaminants. If you have a private well, it’s your responsibility to test the water quality, as it can be impacted by agricultural runoff, malfunctioning wastewater treatment systems, and naturally-occurring chemicals and minerals.

Some signs of unsafe water include a strange odor or taste, cloudy appearance, or stained plumbing fixtures. To verify the purity and safety of your well or city tap water, you can use an at-home water testing kit or send a sample to a state-certified lab for a more comprehensive analysis. These tests will screen for dangerous microorganisms, heavy metals like lead, nitrates and nitrites, volatile organic compounds, and other hazardous pollutants. If any contaminants are detected, appropriate water treatment solutions can then be implemented, such as installing reverse osmosis units, water softeners, or distillers.

With regular testing and necessary treatment measures, you can have peace of mind knowing the water you drink and use is clean and safe.
